The First Electric GTI Is Here And It's Not A Golf
Fifty years after the first Golf GTI hit the road in 1976, Volkswagen has finally put those three famous letters on an electric car.
Meet the ID. POLO GTI.
VW unveiled it at the Nürburgring 24 Hours, and the message from Wolfsburg is clear. This is not a watered-down GTI. This is 100% electric, 100% GTI.
Real GTI Numbers, Electric Heart
Under the skin is a single front-mounted motor making 226 PS, that's 223 hp, and 290 Nm of torque, all sent to the front wheels. It sprints from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.8 seconds and tops out at 175 km/h. Yes, a petrol Golf GTI is quicker on paper at 5.9 seconds, but that has never been what GTI was about.
It is about how it corners. And VW gave it the hardware to prove it. Every ID. POLO GTI comes standard with an electronically controlled front differential lock, adaptive DCC sport suspension, progressive steering, and a dedicated GTI driving mode that sharpens everything and bathes the cockpit in GTI-specific graphics and colors.
The battery is a 52 kWh net NMC pack. It delivers up to 424 km of WLTP range, so 263 miles, with a flat charging curve that does 10 to 80 percent in around 24 minutes on a 105 kW DC charger. AC charging is 11 kW.
At 4,096 mm long and 1,540 kg, it is 299 mm longer than the original 1976 Golf GTI, but VW says the proportions are intentionally reminiscent of that car, just transported into the future. It sits 17 mm lower than the standard ID. Polo and keeps the same 441 litres of boot space and full headroom.
Looks Like A GTI, Feels Like A GTI
This was previewed by the ID. GTI concept in 2023, and technical chief Kai Grünitz said they brought almost every detail into production. It shows.
You get small diffusers front and rear, lightly bloated wheel arches, angular side skirts, a miniature bootlid spoiler, and the classic honeycomb front grille with the full-width light bar and red stripe. The 19-inch alloys are a modern take on the old pepperpot steelies with a golf-ball pattern.
Inside, it is nearly identical to the regular ID. Polo but with the right upgrades. Plushier materials, premium sport seats with a fresh interpretation of the classic tartan check, lots of GTI badging, a 10.25-inch digital display that can mimic a 1980s Golf, a 13-inch central touchscreen, and still, thankfully, physical buttons and knobs on the dashboard and steering wheel. IQ.LIGHT LED matrix headlights are standard.
As Grünitz put it, it has everything that belongs to a real GTI.
When And How Much
The ID. POLO GTI will launch in Germany in Autumn 2026, with the UK to follow in early 2027. Price in Germany starts at just under 39,000 euros, which is roughly 8,000 dollars less than a petrol Golf GTI. Bad news for US readers, Volkswagen has confirmed it will not come to America.
It joins a growing but still small club of electric hot hatches alongside the Alpine A290, Peugeot e-208 GTi, Vauxhall Corsa GSE and its mechanical twin, the Cupra Raval VZ.
For fifty years GTI meant adding excitement where you least expected it. Now it is doing the same thing, just without petrol.
