BMW Z4: The Roadster That’s Still All About the Drive
It’s not trying to be practical. It’s a 2-seat convertible built for one thing: driving with the top down.
What the Z4 Is All About
The Z4 sits in BMW’s lineup as the brand’s pure roadster. Long hood, short rear deck, and a soft-top roof that drops in about 10 seconds. No back seats, no compromises. Just you, one passenger, and the road.
For 2026, BMW hasn’t made a full redesign. Instead they kept what works and refined it. That means the same sharp chassis, the same inline engines, and the same focus on rear-wheel-drive balance that made the 2019 Z4 a hit.
Engine and Performance
You get two engine choices.
The base sDrive30i uses a 2.0L turbo 4-cylinder with 255 horsepower. It’s light, responsive, and more than quick enough for daily driving and weekend backroads.
Then there’s the M40i. This is the one people talk about. A 3.0L turbo inline-6 making 382 horsepower. It comes with an 8-speed automatic, but BMW still offers a 6-speed manual on this trim. That combo is rare now. 0-60 mph happens in around 4.4 seconds, and the sound from that B58 engine is addictive.
Both versions are rear-wheel drive only, with near perfect 50/50 weight distribution. BMW tuned the suspension so the car feels planted in corners but still comfortable enough for a road trip. The M40i adds adaptive dampers and bigger brakes if you plan to push it.
Design Inside and Out
Outside, the Z4 went aggressive in 2019 and it still looks fresh. The wide kidney grille, slim LED headlights, and muscular fenders give it presence. With the soft-top up it looks sleek. With it down, it looks like a classic sports car.
Inside is driver-focused. You sit low. The dashboard wraps around you with a 10.25-inch iDrive screen, physical climate knobs, and leather upholstery. Storage is minimal because this isn’t a GT car. You get 10 cubic feet of trunk space with the roof up. It’s enough for a weekend bag for two, not much more.
Tech is solid for 2026: wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, BMW’s iDrive 8, and the usual safety features. But the point of the cabin is the view over that long hood with the top down.
sDrive30i vs M40i: Which One?
Pick the sDrive30i if you want a lighter, more efficient Z4 for cruising and daily fun. It’s cheaper to run and still feels like a BMW.
Pick the M40i if performance matters most. The extra power, manual option, and sportier setup make it the enthusiast’s choice. It’s also likely the last time we’ll see a BMW roadster with a manual.
Who Should Buy It
The Z4 isn’t for everyone, and BMW doesn’t pretend it is. It’s for people who value driving feel over back seats and cargo space. It’s a second car, a weekend car, or a daily driver if you don’t need to haul much.
It shares its platform with the Toyota Supra, but the Z4 is tuned to be a bit more comfortable and open-air. Where the Supra is a coupe, the Z4 is about the experience of driving without a roof.
The Bottom Line
In a world going electric and SUV, the 2026 BMW Z4 feels defiant. It’s small, loud, and focused. BMW hasn’t confirmed what comes after 2026, so this might be your last chance to get a new gas-powered BMW roadster with a manual.
If you want a car that makes a 20-minute drive feel like 20 minutes of fun, the Z4 still delivers.
