UK No Longer Supporting ED’s Application to Rejoin Commonwealth Due to Human Rights Abuses

United Kingdom’s Minister of State for Africa at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, Harriet Baldwin said her country will not be able to support Zimbabwe’s application to be readmitted into the Commonwealth. She said this when she appeared before the British Parliament’s International Development Committee. Said Baldwin: "Zimbabwe has written a letter to the common wealth secretary as with many other countries, I would to say that the UK is one of the members of the common wealth, clearly, it has to be a unanimous decision by 53 members but as of today the UK will not be able to support that application because we don’t believe that the kind of human rights violations that we have seen from security forces in Zimbabwe is the kind of behavior that we would like to see from members of the common wealth."

It is time to make Africa prosperous and enable its people to attain a dignified standard of living,” he said. Addressing the 2019 edition of “Investing in African Mining Indaba”, the world’s largest mining investment conference, in Cape The town, South Africa yesterday, the President said mining companies should, therefore, not expect to make extraordinary profits on the African continent.

Forbes Releases 2019 List of Richest Men in Africa Nigeria’s Aliko Dangote has retained his place as the richest man in Africa. He remained number one on the newly released Forbes’ list of African billionaires. He, however, lost almost $2bn compared to his last year’s worth. The list was released on Wednesday. Dangote’s estimated $10.3 billion net worth is nearly $2 billion less than a year ago. Another Nigerian, Folorunsho Alakija was one of the billionaires, who suffered a drop in their net worth between last year and this year, as she held No 19 on the 20-man list. The rating magazine reports that Alakija’s net worth dropped due to a decline in the value of one of Nigeria’s most productive oil fields. Mike Adenuga, the owner of Globacom, emerged Africa’s 5th richest man. He is worth an estimated $9.2 billion. Others are Nigeria’s cement mogul Abdulsamad Rabiu, who runs and owns the BUA Group, standing at number 16 on the list for the first time since 2015. Here ...
